A Brief Understanding of Tartans
Originally, the Scottish Tartan was a distinction of rank or position. It was not identified by weave but by the number of colours in the weave.  If only one colour was used it depicted a servant, two,  a farmer rank,  three, an officer rank,  five, a chieftain, six for a poet, and seven for a Chief.  Eventually, clans or families adopted their own tartan, using a range of animal and earth colours which were frequently secret, only known to the weavers of the islands.  They included yellows, blues, whites, greens, browns, reds, black and purple. Some say that a keen eye can identify the colour with a particular island, almost like a wine taster can identify the year and the vineyard.
The Rutledge family can trace their ancestors back to the ancient territories of the English and Scottish Border Ridings, between the 11th and 12th centuries. From very early on, the Rutledge family not only held lands and estates in the English and Scottish Border Ridings, but were also actively allied with other influential families. Plantations also branched out into other territories and holdings, before taking the long voyage to the new world.
By developing this web site, it is my hope that we will enjoy our heritage and wear our tartan.

Anyone interested in ordering tartan,  here is the information I have gathered:

Medium weight double width Rutledge Tartan
54 inches wide x 36 inches long = $65 per yard long.
Minimum order from the mill is 24 yards.
Suitable for garments, including skirts, ties, cummerbunds, jackets trews and
even kilts. With a kilt, you run the risk of showing off your tackle if the wind gets high.
Otherwise, it is fine. This double width can help avoid a seam when making ladies skirts of a wider, flared pattern.

Heavy weight single width Rutledge Tartan
28 inches wide x 36 inches long = need quote from mill
Minimum order from the mill is 8 yards
This the most suitable weight for kilts, blankets, furniture upholstering.

Rutledge Tartan ties = $24 each

Kilts- 8 yards of single wide material will make the average mans Kilt. Also, most suitable for Kilts is 4 yards of double wide material, split down the middle, to give eight yards of material. This might sound alarming but is a perfectly normal procedure in Kilt making
8 yards will make the average mans Kilt ( up to 38 inch waist )
Great Kilt will require double wide material. Medium or heavy weight material.

Other Tartans will be available in the near future. Call for availability.
The above pricing includes USA 30% import tax, shipping and mail insurance.
As this is a new Tartan, it will not be found lying on the shelves of your local supplier.
Also, the limited amount of orders has an affect on the price of the material.
